Social Security Survivor Benefits?

My mom died when I was 16. A month after my mom died my grandparents got custody of me when I was 17. I called down to Social Security and they told me the amount that I was receiving when I was 18. I got put out and just recently we got into a huge argument because they told me that it was for room and board.

They never gave me anything. I always had dirty shoes, never anything nice and they were well off before my mother passed. Now I'm 30 and the conversation came up again. Now my grandmother is saying she never received anything for me and the lady at Social Security told me that she was receiving it because she was my caregiver. Is there anything that I can do to make them pay me the money back?

There probably isn't anything you can do to make them pay back as sad as that is.They were your guardians so they are entitled to the money unfortunately.

I would contact the Legal Aid Society. They may be able to help you. I'm not sure what the statute of limitations is, however. 12 years may be too much.
