My mom has been taking my check since I was 13, buying unnecessary thing with it. I never see a dime. I turn 18 in three days. Do I have to go through my mom to get my check, or can I set up a bank account and finally receive my own money? The check is coming from my deceased father, and I'll still be in school.

Your best bet would be to talk to your local Social Security Office. That being said, here is something to think about. Who kept a roof over your head, fed you, paid utilities, provided transportation for you(and all that the transportation includes), where did you get your spending money and clothes. All of this and probably more came out of your survivors benefits.
So many kids seem to think they should actually be handed the money, without thinking about the fact that they are being supported by it. I don't know what the age limit is for cutting off the benefits, but it could be that being you will soon be 18. At that time you will be considered an adult and should be able to take care of yourself. This will probably depend on certain circumstances.
By law, out of your check she can provide your insurance, buy your share of food, take out your share of the rent or mortgage, your share of the utilities, your medical co-pays, your clothing, any dental work, shoes, gasoline to run you places, your personal items, your school expenses, auto insurance for you, yearbooks, class ring, graduation fees, books, etc. Most kids think their parents spend it to party.
My kids get $630 each. Their expenses come to over $1800 each (partly because they are now in braces, and even though in high school, also taking a few college classes for dual credit which require tuition).
Do you honestly think you could survive on your check if you were out on your own? Most likely not.
You have received some very good answers. Your social security office can answer all of your questions as all cases are different so no one answer would be correct.
Most likely, as long as you live with an adult that takes care of your needs - they will receive the check and usually do not have to answer to anyone as how it is spent.
