So as to run full loads only in my washing machine, which is most efficient, I keep 2 popup hampers in my bathroom closet. One has a little hanging tag marked "Lights", and the other "Darks". As I take off my clothes, they are put into the appropriate hamper. When one is full, I do a load of laundry. In a larger family, this can be done in each person's room or bathroom, and combined for laundry day. It saves sorting dirty laundry, and it saves time.

Be careful that you are not overloading your washing machine, which could cause it to fail prematurely. We have a 4 section laundry sorting hamper, and each section holds 2 loads of laundry. With the newer, more energy efficient machines that use less water, you cannot fill them all the way to the top with clothing anymore. I suggest you read your machines manual to see how many pounds of clothing your machine accommodates, it is probably less than you think.
Yes, I have a front loader, and have become very good at estimating what a full load is! Love my HE washer and dryer.
