Scrap strip quilt block design
Total Time: 1 hour
Supplies:
- fabric strips
- scissors
- pins
- sewing machine
- thread
- rotary cutter
- cutting mat
Steps:
- I used various widths of fabric strips to make this project. (The rectangle after sewing strips together should measure 7.5 inches by 8 inches.) Make two rectangles. (Or you can make one long rectangle measuring 7.5 inches wide by 16 inches long.) Cut strips in half to make two rectangles. Below shows four triangles and this would be enough to make two potholders.
- Next, using the rotary cutter, cut each of the rectangles diagonally in the same direction--either from upper left to bottom right or upper right to bottom left. This is very important to cut them in this manner or the pattern won't work out. I made a mistake on one set of mine.
- Cut out a 2 1/2 by 2 1/2" square for the middle. Lay out the design as pictured. Begin sewing the triangles to the center square as follows: Pin first triangle (first left) to middle square, right sides together. Sew halfway down the square as pictured. Pin second triangle (bottom left) to middle square and first triangle. Sew. Pin third triangle (first right) to middle square and bottom left triangle. Sew. On the last row, pin fourth triangle to middle square and finish sewing to the end. All squares should be connected. Press and trim square with rotary cutter and cutting mat until all sides are even. One block finished! I added four strips around the edge of my square but this step is not necessary.
