Spray Painting Furniture Without Sanding or Priming?

I want to paint a baby's changing table. Can I just spray paint it? The original color is oak wood and I want to paint it white. Is it OK to just spray paint it?

We are also painting the crib using Kiltz and sanding. It seems like it is coming out gritty. Will the paint take that grittiness away once it's dry? It's giving us a little bit of trouble. Can you please help us? I want it to come out smooth.
Thank you. Changing table.

I have had success with a primer then paint, but if there is a very slick or glossy finish you will do better sanding first, even if it's a light go-over with a relatively fine grit. Then prime and paint. You don't want to take any chances with any peeling on something a small child will be exposed to.
