Sprouting an Avocado Seed?

I am trying to sprout an avocado seed. It has a 3 inch root but hasn't done much since it grew the root about 3 or 4 weeks ago. Should I keep waiting for a sprout?

The root sprouts pretty fast. The stem that will have leaves takes longer to show. Be patient, keep the roots in water or damp soil, give bright light, and it will eventually grow the stem up top as the pit starts to split.

Have fun waiting, and be proud when it shows you it's leaves. Good luck !!!

I love growing avocado trees but usually give them away when they start with leaves.
I've noticed they do not all grow roots and sprouts the same time period but if you have it setting where it's getting lots of light (no direct sun) it should be sprouting soon.

You can check out how to set it up and what to watch for on the link. You should see more activity soon.

This is a growing project commitment ! There are many steps to growing and getting your tree to maturity for fruit , which is after at least 5 years of growth in the best conditions. To grow from seed you need to place in water, and direct sunlight indoors(bright window sill is best) Keep water fresh for 2 to 5 weeks until roots appear. Normally people sprout the seed with some toothpick and a small container of water. The seed should split open and sprout some roots. You don't really need to wait much longer after this one to plant it in the soil.

Some people wait until they see a small sprout coming out of the seed before they plant it. Normally here all I do is get the roots started on the seed and then transfer it to the soil and allow it to grow from there.

It is a time consuming process but so fun!! Be sure to keep the water clean and hopefully you will start to see leaves soon. There are a bunch of good YouTube videos on this very topic!! Most are geared to kids...but we are all kids at heart so enjoy!!
