These steel pen stands are stuck in each other. How do I separate them?

These have an unusual design so the usual methods may not work - but read suggestions from everyone and give it a try.
- With regular steel glasses/cups you could set the bottom cup in hot water and add ice to the top cup and that will usually work but not sure about your pen holders.
- Tried just putting them in hot water and gently working them apart?
- Several sites stated using kitchen spray oils or even WD40 but I have not tried that.
- Check this site out - it shows glass glasses but it might still work.

Where I used to work we sold metal garbage cans which were always getting stuck together in stacks. We would spray WD-40 all the way around where they were stuck and they would come apart.

I have luck with sticking them in the freezer until very cold to the touch then a quick run under hot water and a very gentle twist.
