As somebody who has helped a lot of strays in my neighborhood over the years, I've noticed that ear mites are a major problem with kitty cats.
And in one situation I saw ear mites create a horrible infection type scenario with an older cat.
My veterinarian recently applied ivermectin into my cats ear AN off the street rescue- and within two days I was amazed to see the the thick yukky ear mite goop clearing out!
It was like a miracle!
And the poor cat also had a horrible abscess from scratching her ear, the abscess completely surrounded the ear and part of her head, the same night as the treatment, her abscess drained. That took about 20 minutes. I've never seen anything like it,
But everything worked out good, and that's the most important thing.
You hit the nail on the head, a lot of people who rescue/rehab- even helping a few cats in their own backyard, we cannot afford $100 for the office visit, then the mandatory vaccines, then the ear mite test, then the ear mite medication for multiple cats!
