A great addition or substitute for nutmeg in banana bread is cardamom. I did not have nutmeg once and used cardamom in its place and thought it was the best banana bread I have ever had.

Use mace. It's almost the exact same thing.
I have used both cinnamon or cloves. Cloves by the way you can put in homemade soups, use a pinch for a smaller amount, up to a tsp for a huge amount, especially if you are using sort of bitter things, such as celery is sometimes.
