What to do for free and fun during summer? Can't go wrong with reading and being rewarded. Check with your local library to see if you can participate in summer reading - this is available for kids and adults!
Example of my local library:

If your local library is not participating, you can join summer reading with Barnes and Nobles for kids only. Complete your summer reading log and you can get a free book.

We always, on the last day of school during my son's elementary and early junior high years, headed to the library and loaded up on books for us both. Then, in the afternoon, we'd go to the coolest place in the house and I'd read to him until he fell asleep, and then I'd get a nap, too.
