Brown meat in heavy skillet. Add all ingredients except beans and almonds. Cover. Simmer 2 hours. Stir in beans. Remove bay leaves. Garnish with almonds.
Slow-Cooker Method:
Brown meat and onions in heavy skillet. Put in slow cooker and add rest of ingredients except almonds. Cook on low for 6 hours. Garnish with almonds and serve.
