Gold Post Medal for All Time! 969 Posts

A window covered with colorful fabric. In about 20 minutes, I fixed a problem that had been bothering me for a while now. Easy, temporary and cheap!! This might be a great solution to a similar problem you are having. Hope you like it.

Total Time: 20 Minutes

Yield: 1

Supplies:

A package of removable hooks and a dowel.

Steps:

  1. I got two Dollar Tree strips for the dowel support. I just wanted it to be secure but not permanent, as I rent.
  2. A removable hook on the side of a window.

A removable hook on the side of a window.

  3. I put them on the outside of the window space just inside the top of the window. I cut the dowel with pliers and just sat it in the hooks.

You can actually see how the neighbor likes to turn her chair toward me. Ahem...
  4. A chair turned toward the uncovered window.

  5. Then, after the fabric was cut, it simply folded over by half, to the dowel and hung down perfect. It looks nice from each side and I can change with for lace, a lighter fabric, leave it off, etc.

    N-JOY!

Difficult to find out the right limit between too nosy and indifferent when you badly need help. From the years I spent living in England I thought that the english people were the ones who know best how to keep that limit clear and I still do today.

I just put contact paper over the glass. Peels right off.

It's a rental and they won't let us. I do like contact paper, as long as it lets in light during the day. My fav' is frosted contact paper, but even if they let us, I can never get that last bubble out!

Great idea and you could even change the fabric with the seasons.

Yep. For now, this was what I had and it looks nice from either side. Also, it was folded in the middle like it was waiting for me to do this!!

Thanks Sandi,
I like this idea with using fabric as we have often had to make a 'temporary' closed area but we've always used a shower curtain or a pretty sheet and now we have another alternative.

I'll have to remember the dowel also because we usually had to use a round curtain rod (sometimes difficult to find) but a dowel can be cut to fit - neat...
Cheers - Stay safe

Thanks. I wanted something they couldn't see through, plus the dowel was super cheap. It was just 1.39 at Ace and easy to cut, too. I also needed it to stand out from the door, as there wasn't enough room for a tension rod.

I needed a 1,80 meter wood rod to make a curtain that can be drawn back on each side of the window. I went to a DIY store and only found 5 meter wood rod (7 Euro !). I travel by bus only and of course I can't get on the bus with a 5 meter wood rod. Of course there is a small place in the DIY store where you can cut wood yourself, that is, if you can manage not to badly hurt the not looking so friendly customer next in the file and if you can manage to untangle the chain that keeps the saw safe from being stolen.

I was about to give up my hope of a wood curtain rod but I suddenly had the idea : broom handles ! I found them in the store next door. a nice wood broom handle, 1,90 meter long, 1,49 Euro ! I only had to fix 2 cup hooks on each size of the window, 14 curtain rings and that's all. The curtain was ready. If you want something lighter than wood and already painted the metal broom handles are nice too.

Imma do this but I think I'll use a twig instead of a dowel. Great idea. Thanks.
