Surviving Parvo with Vet Treatment?

I have a 5 year old Chihuahua. He started showing signs of not feeling good on Thursday, (loss of appetite and lethargic). On Friday he started throwing up, no diarrhea or blood but had trouble going. He kept drinking water, but would heave and throw it up shortly after. I took him to the vet on Saturday. He was diagnosed with parvo. We decided to leave him there for treatment, cause we have other cats and dogs. But we can't see him cause they don't want him getting excited and thinking he's going home. He has stopped vomiting, but hasn't pooped. They say his tail wags every time they talk to him, and they're gonna try to feed him today. It's now Monday, but all they could tell me on Saturday was he had a 50/50 chance. I'm worried we didn't take him in soon enough (2 days after first symptoms). We thought he was just feeling puny. And I'm worried cause he's so small. And I'm worried if I made the right choice leaving him for treatment instead of home treatment. (Vet treatment sounded like his best chances)

The vet was definitely the right choice. You also need to clean your homes surfaces with a diluted bleach solution to kill the virus and protect your other dogs.

Dog with parvo.

Step 1
You did the right thing he is better off at the vets.

Step 2
Sounds like you got him there on time.

Step 3
He is starting to eat and they probably have him on IV fluids and medicine.

Step 4
Sounds like he is responding well to treatment.

Dog's with Parvovirus:

  1. You have gotten him tot he vet in time and they have started the treatment.
  2. He is also an older dog and should of had his parvovirus shots when he was younger.
  3. This will also help him and that might of been one of the reason he wasn't as sick with the virus.
  4. Now that he is safe and at the vet's it is time to clean your home for your other animals.
  5. You will need to mix bleach with water and start cleaning all the floors and surfaces around your home.
  6. Take your other animals to the vet and make sure their parvovirus shots are up to date and they don't need another one because of this dog being sick.

  8. Make sure you wash all his begging, food dishes, water dishes and toys. This is very important because the virus will hang on and stay in these items.
  9. Talk with your vet to make sure you don't need to keep the other dog's and cat's away from him and find out if there is anything else you can do at home to protect them.
  10. I would also visit a few websites about the parvovirus and follow some of their helpful hints and suggestions to protect your other animals at home.
  11. Your dog is in good hands and he will probably make it because the vet is monitoring him now and taking good care of him.
