You should have been informed about how/when to report a change in income when you were first granted food stamps. It would be best to go in person to report the change just in case they need more information but you could make a telephone call to make an appointment.

Please remember - not reporting a change could be construed as fraud and there is a penalty for failing to do this. Also, the food stamp program is a government agency and many government agencies now work together (or share information) just to try to keep people from collecting from more than one agency (abusing the system).

Does this always work to stop fraud? No - but it does work sometime and when it does work - the individual "caught" is usually prosecuted and also has to repay any extra money collected. Remember - social security numbers are so easy to trace through any government program (all entitlement programs, IRS, Hud) - we are all "numbered".

I believe it is always best to be thankful for what we receive and stay within the guidelines of any programs that are set up to help in times of need.
