I don't like to leave the front porch light on during the day, but sometimes it gets dark before I get home. Alas, I don't have a timer or a remote control for the porch light and I hate digging in my purse for a flashlight. Recently, I stumbled upon a solution.
The hardware store chain that is always publishing coupons recently featured one of those portable LED lights that look like light switches. It is the same size as a wired-in light switch and looks almost exactly like one. You switch on the light and a really bright battery-powered LED comes on. The thing has a glow-in-the-dark tape on it with a strong magnet on the back.
So, I just attached it to my mailbox, which is on the porch. If you don't have a mailbox on your porch, its magnet will stick to any metal item or you can attach it some other way. Now, if I come home after dark, I can find it, flip on the light and see to unlock my door. It is super handy and the whole thing cost me less than three dollars! I plan to get one for the back patio door as well. Bonus: since this light runs on a battery, it doesn't run up my electric bill!
