The Best Way To Separate Eggs

Gold Post Medal for All Time! 523 Posts

Separating egg yolks from the whites with your hands.I just had to post this tip. I have seen so many that require the use of plates, bottles or some gadget that has to be cleaned later.

I am going to tell you the absolute best way to separate yolks from whites. You will become a pro at it. You will remember this technique for the rest of your life. You will want to share it with your friends. My only regret is that I don't have a video camera to film this technique for you. (Perhaps the editors would like to try their hand at this and get the action on video).

If you like, you can test my tip right now. (I know you want to). Wash your hands, thoroughly! Break an egg into a small deep bowl. With four fingers slightly spread apart, reach into the bowl and under the yolk. Slightly cup your fingers upwards so that the yolk rests atop your fingers where they join the palm. Now lift your fingers just clear of the white. Next, squeeze your fingers together tightly. This will 'cut' away any white still attached to the yolk.

In your hand is the yolk, separated from the white. Total time required: about ten seconds, less when you master the technique. Now, put the yolk wherever you needed it, rinse your hand and get on with your life!

I agree that your hand is the best separator, but I don't dirty a bowl to complete this task. I just crack the egg and drop it into my hand and proceed with your method.

Harlean,

I'm always willing to learn a better way, but without a bowl, your white is going to land on the counter top or the floor. Did I miss something? My 'small, deep bowl' was to hold two egg whites for making meringue.
(Ten to one, your a great cook)

Just hold your hand over whatever needs the egg-whites.
I usually wet my hand beforehand, but that is just a habit. Might not be necessary.

I too love learning things. But, I would rather rinse a saucer or bowl than my hands. Twice.

I have an egg separator from the dollar tree and it works like a charm. I even do the back and forth with the egg half, when it cooperates that is. Eggs can contract bacteria so easy, why risk it?

If you don't want to use your hand, try this fast and easy method. Take a clean, empty water or soda bottle. Put egg in a bowl. Turn the bottle upside down and squeeze it over the yolk. The yolk will suck up into the bottle leaving all the white in the bowl. You can do this over and over again. When I first learned this trick, my granddaughter played with the same egg for almost an hour, sucking it up into the bottle and releasing it into another bowl....of course we threw the egg away when she was done playing with it!

My first job was as a car hop. Near the men's restroom, but just outside it, and in view of the dining area was a lavatory. If customers wanted to wash their hands without going inside the restroom, they could. Once, I used the restroom, came out and started to go back to work. The owner stopped me and asked me to wash my hands at the lavatory outside the restroom. I said 'I washed my hands before coming out of the restroom'.

He said 'I don't doubt you did, but I want you to wash them out here where the customers can see you wash your hands. I did...and I thought to myself 'Now this guy knows cleanliness.'.

I wash or rinse my hands several times during the course of preparing a meal. Two more times ain't no big deal.

I am glad ThriftyFun makes older posts available for readers as I have several "posters" that I keep in my favorites and love to return to past entries and read the new comments that are so many times missed because readers tend to read something one time and never take the time to look a second time.
