My daughter has a Lil Sew and Sew, but the thread keeps breaking. No matter how much we adjust the tension, the thread either breaks, or the stitches get looser.

A rough needle can cause the thread to break. Try a new needle.
you might also try to make sure you're not using thread that's too old or brittle.
As well, make sure you clear your thread path by using a small a spool as possible.
