Threading Sewing Machine Needles

Threading Sewing Machine Needles - piece of white paper behind sewing machine needleI have trouble seeing the eye on my sewing machine to thread it. I found this very helpful. Thread machine as normal. Then lower the pressure foot and raise the needle to its highest height on sewing machine. Threading Sewing Machine Needles

Make sure you sewing machine light is on. Put a small piece of white paper behind the eye of the needle on your sewing machine. You can then see the eye very easily. Just aim for the small light hole in the needle. Threading Sewing Machine Needles - piece of white paper behind sewing machine needle

It's never recommended to thread a sewing machine needle with the presser foot in the down position. Why? Because lowering the pressure foot causes the tension discs to fully engage, so threading the machine in that position can cause failed thread paths, skipped stitches when sewing, and overstress on the discs that eventually causes damage requiring fairly expensive repairs.

I know this as I teach Sewing 101 and also do repairs for my students. And I've repaired more than one machine threaded with the presser foot lowered.

I wear trifocals and the 'automatic' threader on my modern machine is becoming a bit difficult to see unless I use a hands-free magnifier. I'm finding the magnifier and a cheap wire loop hand sewing needle threader loaded from the back of the machine through the needle eye to be easier.

I have found the best way is to thread the machine as usual. Take the needle out and thread it. Then put back in the machine. Of course making sure that you insert the needle the right way.

The flat side of the needle goes to the back or to the right. However your machine is made.

I use the needle threader that you can buy at the fabric shops for around $1.00. They are made of aluminum foil with a wire hook. You slip the wire hook thru the eye of the needle then slip the thread into the hook and oull both the thread & the hook back out together and you now have a threaded needle.

Get needle threaders from your local fabric shop. Makes threading a needle so easy I use them all the time on my sewing
machine.

I just discovered recently that if I put my finger behind the needle it helped to see the eye of the needle. Old eyes need any help they can get : )

If concerned about the pressure foot being in down position. Just put the item you are sewing under the foot. Then thread needle.
