I am looking for ideas for cleaning or repairing scratch marks left behind after snaking the toilet.

You could look in the yellow pages under bathtubs. There will be bathtub and sink repairs listed. It may be possible someone listed could repair the toilet. You would have to call and also get a price quote. (08/18/2006)

You might try turning off the water, flushing the toilet and then using Mr. Clean Magic Eraser on the marks. If that doesn't work I'd try gently using a pumice stone. Good luck. (08/19/2006)

The pumice stone will work fine getting the scratches off. May take a little elbow grease. Clorox Duel action toilet bowl cleaner is excellent. I let that soak the sides and then scrub with a non scratchy sponge after 15 minutes. That takes off even well water stains which are tough. You don't need to hire anyone else, it just looks scary. Pumice will not hurt the surface, although it seems like it would. (08/20/2006)

I was told that I may have tree roots in my pipe and that if I pour ice cream salt in the toilet it would kill the tree roots, and likely the tree. After doing this twice I noticed that the scratches to the porcelain had vanished.
I first emptied the water with a cup and sponge. Then tried the barkeepers with a magic eraser for about 2 minutes, the stain was slightly improved, but too much work for me! So I wiped it out and added about 1/4 cup muriatic acid (bought at Ace hardware) and used a toilet brush. The stain was gone in 30 sec. Be careful to not use too much, the fumes were not pleasant. By the way, I had tried the pumice stone first about 2 weeks prior and it took some of the stain out, but was a lot of scrubbing and not that effective. I flushed the toilet about 6 times after just to make sure to dilute the acid and push it through the pipes to the main sewer.
