We have a 4 month old Cocker Spaniel, who we regularly take out into the back garden for a wee or a poo. He has a spot where he goes. When indoors he will go to the back door to be let out to go to toilet, but he will also wee and poo on our carpet in the hallway. Is there a way we can stop him doing this?

Make sure he has no physical issues. If he is fine physically, make sure he has a strict feeding and walking schedule. He may have to be crated if he cannot be trusted in the house.
Has the vet given the pup a clean bill of health? I always worry about urinary tract infections. If all is well, talk to the vet about crate training.
He's still very young. It took almost 2 years for my one daschshund to be fully trained. She was fully trained at 8 months, and then I moved and that set her back, then my nephews came along and she regressed again.
Crate training is the key. And consistency. The vet can give you the best guidance for your fur baby. Carmel's vet had a calculation about age and weight that I wish I could remember. It was something like for every pound, they should be in the crate for no more than some number of hours, then out to potty, then back in the crate. As they grow the ratio changes. It works!
After all my girlie's early issues, she was perfect until she was almost 16 and then we did 1 12 years of diapers for age related incontinence. We let her at 17 1/2. I miss her!
Prayers for you and your pup!!!
