I have a Toro riding mower with 16 HP B & S engine that sounded like it wanted to start but wouldn't. I thought maybe it was the battery, but the lights turned on. I tried to start again and it backfired. Now it won't even turn over. Any ideas?

Remove the spark plug and check a carbon build up. If found clean the plug. Check and rest the plug gap as required. Check for the smell of gas in the combustion chamber. If there is a strong smell of gas, leave the plug out until the gas Oder goes away.
Good luck.
