Training Your Dog to Wear a Top Knot

For a long time I tried everything I could think of to get my little female Yorkie to wear a top knot, but she had other ideas. Finally I stumbled across the perfect recipe for us. I hope this helps you fix the top knot troubles of your little drama queen or king.

I have found two things that allow me to put a top knot on my Yorkie that she does not mind at all. First and foremost, do NOT pull it tight. Let it stay loose so they can not really feel it. If she does not feel it, she does not think about it and does not bother with it.

The second is hard to find. They are very tiny claw clips. I have found them on eBay and at dollar stores. You just pull up a bit of hair and pinch the clip around the hair, but not attached to the head. It is like a super easy elastic that never gets tangled in her hair.

If you do need to spend time then do it in little bits at a time and follow with a tiny treat. It is easier to spend 2 minutes here and 3 minutes there than to stress out your pup and yourself. You want to get the end results without screaming, gritting your teeth, or threatening the dog. A few breaks can make the difference.

Do not forget to quietly talk to them the entire time in a soothing voice telling them how good they are being. I have found that by using their name a lot and talking barely over a whisper, they quieten down some. They are trying to listen which causes them to be less active.
