I adopted a Pit Bull mix puppy, who is 1 a year old. She appears she might have been abused before I got her from the shelter. They did not tell me how or what was done to her. When I brought her home to my family I found that she is wakes up from naps startled, growls, and barks. She also randomly will walks to the closed bedroom doors and begin barking and growling. I don't want to have to return her to the shelter, but I am afraid I don't know how to handle/help her. Are there any tips on how to fix these two problems I have?

If the dog was abused this can be an issue and can lead to other or more serious problems down the road.
You will need to really work with this dog and give her a lot of love and understanding. Pit Bulls can turn on people and this is very dangerous. My brother had a Pit Bull mix that he raised around his two daughters. One if his daughters had more to do with the dog than the other one did. One day they were playing and the dog bit one of the girls in the face.
I would suggest that you take the dog in for obedience training and work hard with the dog. I'd hate to see the dog turn and attack a member of your family. When puppies are abused it sticks with them for their life and anything can trigger this and the dog can turn around and attack.
I would return this dog. Your safety and the safety of your family is more important. Your other alternative is to hire some dog trainer who has experience with abused dogs.
