This is a tricky one and I wanted to see what it could be before someday the electrician shows up. Every 20hrs or so our thermostat goes blank and the last AC tech, who said call an electrician, said that there might be a short in the power switch which when turned off shuts off all power to furnace/AC and when turned on gives it power and therefore the thermostat has power and works. However, once again after about 20hrs there's no power and I have to go and mess with that power switch on and off a few times to get the system power. What gives? Is it a short in that switch that after getting hot shorts out? We live in Georgia. This is a repair under our home warranty, but just wanted to get some kind of heads up to what it my be.

Most HVAC units are controlled with 24 volts AC. This requires a control transformer usually located in the HVAC unit itself. My first thought would be that this is failing and that cycling power to it allows it to start working again.
It could also be that the thermostat itself is failing and that cycling power is allowing it to reset.
The serviceman needs to troubleshoot when the system is showing its problem to see if 24 volts is at the thermostat and power is coming to and leaving the control transformer.
