Truck Heater Blowing Cold Air?

I have a 2003 Dodge 1500. Ever since I bought the truck the heater has not worked. It only blows cold air (what's from outside I'm guessing) and it only blows at the highest setting. No noises when its on or off. And just recently, when I turn it on it smells like anti-freeze. What's up? What part is broken and how do I fix it?

Well Teya, since you never said anything about the engine running hot or having to add antifreeze every so often it sounds like the problem is the heater core. The bad thing about fixing this is it is a very involved repair. Under the hood you would have to discharge the AC refrigerant, disconnect the hoses, remove the air box, the heater core hoses and the computer. You now have access to remove the bolts that hold the heater core in place. Now the hard part. You have to remove the steering column along with all the wiring connections, the hand grips on each side of the windshield, the top front section of the dash (held in with 7 clips), 6 bolts that hold the main dash in place, the trim on each side which goes down along the floor, the cover above the hood release, the bracket for the hood release, several more wiring connections, the parking break, more bolts from the steering column, more electrical connections, the entire dash needs to come out.

You also need to remove the evaporator core which should be replaced at this time as well. If you have a garage full of mechanics tools you should be fine. If not this is one for the professionals. Just getting to the heater core will take about an hour and a half if you know your way around the vehicle, wiring harness, AC discharge and disconnect, ets. One last thing is you should use OEM (original equipment manufacturer) parts on this job. The cheaper parts at the quick fix auto mart are definitely not recommended. I also would recommend getting a step by step guide specifically for your truck if you are going to do this yourself. Good Luck!

It could be a plugged heater core or a stuck thermostat.
