My trumpet vine is losing its leaves. They are not dropping, they are disappearing, including the whole leaf stem. I see no sign of aphids or mites.

If not pesky scale or mites, It could be Excessive heat ,making your vine dry with lack of moisture/water to help with the heat!
Hmm...deer don't eat them, most other critters don't eat them, I wonder if you have a human problem--where someone is messing with your plants? Do you have a camera you can point to the plants to see? There is some punishment as some people who touch the plants (especially if they are breaking stems) can get a rash from it if they are sensitive to it.

You could have a fungus, or lack of water. Put mulch around the base of it.
It sounds like someone is taking the leaves off of your plant at the base of the steam. If there are no signs of bugs on the plant and the leaves are not falling to the ground then there is only one other explanation for this.
