My 2 year old son dumped 2 full dishes of cat food in the toilet and flushed it. I have been plunging for 3 hours and it's still not unclogged. I get the water down and flush again to bring it back up, but nothing is coming up anymore and the water is clean. What do I do ?

Pour 1/2 cup Dawn dishwashing detergent in the toilet. Plunge it a little and let it sit for about 15 minutes. Pour a bucket of almost boiling water in the toilet and it will probably release and flush, but if not, use a plunger and it should unstop the toilet.
This is a Thriftyfun tip and it works like magic. (08/08/2010)

Cat food swells when it gets wet. Pour really hot water into the bowl. Keep filling it with really hot water as it slowly drains. The hot water will unclog it, although it my take a while. The cat food has to become mushy so it will break up and go down. Use hot water from your taps, not a kettle, as that is too hot and may damage your plumbing! (08/12/2010)

I would be careful pouring HOT water into the toilet. It could break the bowl. It would be like pouring hot water into a cold glass. Just let it set for a while. The cat food should break down. Try plunging and pouring a bucket of water down. You may have to do it several times. (08/12/2010)

I wouldn't use hot water either! :-o Your problem has most likely already solved itself because even though dry food expands, it definitely breaks down to be flushable in a fairly short period of time. (08/12/2010)

If the previous suggestions haven't worked, then I would call a plumber. (08/12/2010)

Just had to be one more to praise the results of Dawn and hot water. My daughter called in tears; her college bathroom toilet was clogged and they had no plunger. She used the Dawn, let it sit all night, and in the morning poured down hot (not boiling) water, she then flushed and the clog was gone. I was worried it wouldn't work without a plunger but it did. This absolutely works! My son flushed a handful of wipes down the toilet, which eventually led to a huge clog that wouldn't budge and kept getting worse to the point where it we couldn't use the toilet anymore. I read this thread and now I don't have to call a plumber! I just let the dish soap soak in the bowl for about an hour, then plunged before putting in the hot water and just the soap worked!
