Silver Post Medal for All Time! 408 Posts Here is a fun summer craft for the kids! Use a paper plate, an old toothbrush, and watercolor paint, and make a nice artwork of a fish swimming somewhere in the ocean.
Total Time: 20 minutes, drying time excluded
Yield: one artwork
Supplies:
- printout of provided pattern sheet
- thick cardstock
- standard white economy paper plate
- one 15mm wiggle eye
- Staedtler 12-color watercolor set
- black oil pastel
- two glass pebbles
- neon green glitter glue
- quick-drying craft glue (such as Bostik Clear)
- standard scissors
- pencil
- paintbrush
- old toothbrush
- old cloth
- newspaper to protect the working area
Steps:
- Trace the pattern of the fish on to the cardstock and cut it out.
Note: The detail on the cardstock fish in the example was only added to make the photos clearer. - Cover the work area with a sheet of newspaper. Place the cardstock fish on the paper plate. Also place the two glass pebbles near the mouth of the fish, where one would expect to see bubbles when the fish is breathing.
- Dip a slightly wet toothbrush into a color - use the two blue and the green paints from the paint set. If the brush is too wet, dab the brush on the cloth to remove excess water. Hold the toothbrush over the paper plate with the brittles of the brush facing down. With your forefinger fan the paint covered bristles. The paint will spatter over the paper plate in small speckles. Keep fanning the bristles until the whole plate has been covered with speckles.
- Remove the cardstock fish and pebbles.
- Use the oil pastel to draw over the outlines of the bubbles and fish, and add some detail to the body of the fish.
- Use the paintbrush and the watercolor set to color the fish, allowing the colors to interflow. Also add a dash of blue to the bubbles.
- Use the glitter glue to add seaweed around the fish.
- Glue the wiggle eye in place and allow the artwork to dry before displaying.
