I couldn't bear to toss my favorite gardening sneaks. So I used them for planters instead. I nailed them to a fence post and planted some orphaned pole beans in them. Even if I get no beans from the plants, it will be an interesting look.

I've seen plenty of work boot planters sitting in gardens and on porches, but never even gave a thought to securing other footwear onto a fence post! I love your idea!
I did this years ago with my sneakers. They are in the flower bed. I have hen and chicks in them. I just cut slits in the shoes and put the hen and chicks in them.
Thanks to you both. I love putting little surprises in my garden and yard. Keeps me thinking of what could I come up with now, and how to keep one more thing out of the landfill?
Glad you liked my idea.
This does not look quaint or "country" or whatever. It looks like old sneakers hanging on a post. Take a look at "Garden: Boot Planter", and see the creative, original, and classy way of using old boots or shoes.
Buy a plastic flower pot for a dollar and throw these nasty looking shoes away.
Sorry some can't see the creativity in finding new uses for items that would otherwise go into the landfill. And as for plastic pots, the epitome of tackiness and unoriginality. I'd rather see a "nasty" shoe any day. My purpose in posting this idea was to share with those who might have similar tastes and would maybe enjoy trying this idea too.
