Fishing line is a great cake cutter when you want to avoid the cake and icing transferring to the next piece. We did this at my wedding to avoid the vanilla and chocolate cake from mixing and making the icing on the cake look sloppy.

Dental floss is also good for cutting cake and leaving no mess.
I've always used dental floss since it was always in the house, never thought of fishing line. Thanks, I no longer have need of dental floss so its hardly ever around, however, fishing line is, as I use it when crafting.
