I grew up using strips of worn out bed sheets (or fabric) as ties for tomato plants, peppers or whatever plants are staked in your vegetable garden. The best is 100% cotton as it has to be able to "tear" into strips easily. The sheets should be at least 12 inches in length, or longer as plants get bushier. Snip about 1 inch apart and you can take a manageable amount of ties to your garden and tear as needed. I usually tear and wrap a few extras around the tops of each stake for quick on the spot tie ups.
The very best thing about using fabric as ties is at the end of the season when your plants are dead and the garden needs to be put to bed for the winter; pull out the stakes and the ties will simply fall apart; no untwisting or untying necessary as the fabric has rotted from the sun. When your garden is prepped the next season you won't find any traces of fabric anywhere.
I have tried twist ties and velcro ties and they all require too much work trying to get them off the dead plants for reuse. Fabric is much easier. Give it a try. Even if you have to purchase an old percale sheet at a yard sale, it is well worth the investment. Happy gardening!
