Our cat has decided to start clawing wooden furniture. He has never done this before and building him a scratching post has not stopped him from destroying our furniture. I cut his nails frequently but that hasn't helped completely either. I have used nail caps on cats before and decided to use them on him.
To apply them you first need to clip their nails short. Then you apply glue to the inside the cap, then gently push their nail out, and slip the cap on. Hold their nail out for a second for the glue to set and repeat on each nail. I chose to use hot pink so that as the caps come off I know which ones to replace. They work really well and are a great alternative to having your furniture destroyed or having your cat declawed.

I am surprised that your cat let you put them on! My cats would never hear of that and they hate having their claws trimmed. That looks really cute though :)
I may have to try this with my cat, Snickers. Lately he has been sharpening his claws on the wooden legs of the kitchen chairs. I hope the nail caps come in bright green or blue, though. I can't see putting pink on my big bruiser - LOL!
Does this not affect how your cat cleans himself? or do they react well or badly to having them?
I can't help but find this bad considering it's natural for them to scratch.
They can still put their claws out and scratch at their post. Their nails will still shed too. It doesn't seem to affect anything other than their ability to destroy the furniture.
I have a friend with a new kitten that would come running at you from across the room and climb your leg. It was hilarious to see but painful to be the target. They got the nail caps and then everybody was happy. He kept on scratching his scratching post as if there was nothing on his nails. Eventually the nail caps fell off, and he had out grown his crazy game. He is still a pistol tho.
The act of "scratching" is actually the cat leaving its scent on the furniture. It is saying, "this is mine and this one is mine, too." It is also a healthy way for them to shed their claws/fingernails naturally.
