Are you wanting to use these to add 'flavor' to your food?
This type of grill does not have a cover so it would be difficult to 'trap' the flavor to enhance the food.
I have used Liquid Smoke with my indoor grill and if you use it correctly it can add that outdoor grilling flavor. Just use a pastry brush (or any kind of brush) and run a little across your food.

There are websites that say you can use wood chips and charcoal on an electric grill, BUT, I WOULD NOT. I feel unless the company has clear directions on doing this, it would be a huge fire hazard.
You could always call the company--I don't know who made them for Betty Crocker so you can call them and ask: 1-800-446-1898 between (7:30 a.m. - 5:30 p.m. CT, weekdays) and then call the maker if you no longer have the book. I tired to find the book online and I could not find it.
That said, that doesn't mean you can't smoke foods without a smoker. Hubby does it here frequently (we have a smoker but he won't use it in the winter so he uses techniques in the two links I will share below). He also uses the liquid smoke that cybergrannie suggested and that works great too! It is not always easy to find where we are, though. Not sure why.
The first link is straight oven smoking (it says ribs, but he has done chicken, turkey, etc. same general rules follow your normal recipe and cooking times just follow their technique for the roaster.
This second link, he sometimes uses the combo method where he grills the food first (either outside or on the inside grill pan he has), and then finishes it with an indoor smoking in the oven:

You do need to be VERY, VERY careful when using these techniques. They always set off the smoke alarm so make sure your kitchen windows are open if you have them and keep a fan going to circulate the air. Never leave the process unattended and follow all of the prep for the chips to the letter.
The house will smell of smoke for a long time after you cook with the chips--at least our house does. It is not a bad smell, but I get tired of it after a day or too.
Just another word of warning, if anyone has nut allergies in your house do not cook with woods that were from nut trees as a safety precaution. It may not affect everyone the same way, but if he uses pecan he gets ill because he has a nut allergy. I think he only uses apple woods or mesquite. I always need to warn people about this as we had no clue it would affect him that way. Now he has to ask if ordering food from a place that smokes it and if they don't know, he has to skip it.
No charcoal , wood chips can be added in a metal tray along with a little water. This is best if you could place a cover over the cooker to get the smoke flavor and keep it inside your cooker!
It looks like this is an electric grill, so I would not use wood chips or anything else on it - the electric part is what warms it up.
This is an indoor electric grill you can use in your home because it is smoke free and will not set off your smoke alarms. I have one but in mine they suggest I add water to the bottom half under the electric coils. I know men is quite old but works great for cooking and BBQing in the home.
