Some of the fat quarters that I purchase, especially those from Jo-Ann Fabrics are folded around a thin cardboard square. Rather than putting them directly into the recycle bin, I use them for templates when crafting or quilting. They will not stand up to extensive use, but are great for occasional or limited use.

This is such a good idea for we crafters. I use plastic cottage cheese and sour cream lids, too. And sometimes when I am making a large lot of shapes, I glue a plastic lid on the top so I can just hold it down and move on to the next space. I have also done this with wood.
