We are making our own recipes for our dog. Will rice be OK as his basic food mixed with finely diced chicken or beef with just a little gravy?

It is okay to use rice in dog food, although I would recommend brown rice instead of white. Dog food should contain 16% protein, 10% fat, 44% carbohydrates, and 10% vitamin and minerals. The calories from protein should equal 20% of the dog food. Here is a list of foods that are good for dogs:
Meats
Poultry
Organ meats, liver (don't overuse)
Eggs
Cultured dairy products such as yogurt, buttermilk, cheese
Complex carbohydrates such as rice, potatoes, beans, legumes
Fiber sources such as bran, fresh vegetables, whole-grains.
Yes, it is okay to include rice in your dogs diet. I give my dog rice quite often and she loves it. If you look on dog food labels you will see they have added it to the food. Also it is very good for puppies a lot of puppy foods will say chicken and rice or some other meat but always include rice, brown or white I have only ever given white rice to my dogs, and they are thriving.
