The short answer is you can.

The long answer is why do that? It is kind of a rhetorical question because I know it is usually for a quick fix and to make things look better. The "handy man" who had my house before me did this and it was the first thing I had to fix when I moved it because it was lumpy and generally did not last.

When doing flooring, my friend's husband who was a pro and did my floor said if you do it right the first time it will last for years! He was right! He fixed my floor up right and it has been going strong for over 19 years!
