You have to grasp the handles on either side of the top cooking plate in the lid and then pull both handles. If it doesn't work, then I think the top cooking plate is broken and you'll need the replacement parts, call 1-800-738-0245.

First: be sure your grill is unplugged.
Your button has probably gotten 'dirty' from use and if it has fat/oil making it dirty then it probably will 'freeze' up when the grill is cold.

Mine had that problem. Unplugged of course, I would just pull on the latch itself if button not working. Do to each side to get it off.

I think this happened because the top plate have not been properly placed. Check it. I think the top can be pulled out, but this must be done carefully so as not to damage it.
