Is it safe to operate the Lily's 1800 Pro heater while I sleep? The owner's manual says not to. What good is that? Should I return it?

I do not think you will find any electric heater that you just plug in that will say that it is okay to operate it when you are asleep. It isn't even advised to leave Christmas lights plugged in! I have a Dyson Hot+Cool fan heater which shuts off if it tips over, and has no hot surfaces, and it warns against leaving it on when sleeping.
Heat up the room really well before you go to sleep. One of your blankets needs to be a wool blanket. You can probably get one second hand. Use flannel sheets and put a comforter on top.
I purchased this heater last January(2016). It worked fairly well for winter months to supplement my heat pump but it is now dead just past the one year warranty mark. It retailed for about $200 , I bought on sale for $100.
