My middle school Is having a Valentine's dance and we need ideas.
T from District Heights Maryland
One little idea put conversation hearts in little paper cupcake holders. Get some styrofoam and make large heart shape forms then wrap with pink, red ribbons for decorations. Pink, red, silver ballons all around. Then have a photo area,
Treat it as a usual dance, just decorate with pink/red/white & hearts all over the place! Much can be done w/ 8x11 construction paper hearts & crepe paper streamers!
If refreshments are served, think red/pink for the drinks or punch. Snacks & treats can help carry the theme, so if they're donated ask for valentine theme items. Use of red or Valentine napkins helps set the tone. Not everything has to be those colors. Too much is not good. Clear cups & colored/theme napkins work well for example. Or colored cups & napkins with white foam plates. Perhaps the music would be a bit more "romatically" themed, however, not everyone there will be a couple which must be taken into consideration. Unless it's a couples dance.
There's plenty of good rock or modern music that could fit into a Valentine's Day theme. Just think about the titles or words of the songs, anything about love whether good or bad. That would include many songs in any style of music.
Remember that the kids there will be between 6th & 8th grade (guess?) so the ages & interests will be varied. Some are into dating & some are not. It should be enjoyable for all kids represented there. Maybe you could get some teachers involved & raffle (for free & for fun) a dance w/ "your favorite teacher of choice".
Kids could put their names into a "hat" to be chosen to dance. Teachers present would line up & chosen kids would choose a teacher. I don't know if this would be permitted, so get permission first. Could be seen as good entertainment or perhaps not allowed. If allowed, it doesn't have to be a romantic song, fast dancing would be equally as fun, perhaps more so as the teachers may not dance the way the kids do!
Or, for fun, have a coffee can set up for each teacher at the school, kids can cast a paper vote for their 'favorite' / 'most lovable' teacher & write why. With the winner & runners up being announced at the dance & some of the reasons read. The cans of votes & reasons can then be given to those teachers, it will make them smile to see why the students like them. Please do not use these or other activities to hurt feelings of teachers or kids. Hope you enjoy the dance whatever you decide to do. (01/20/2006)

I think you should see if anybody that you know's mom's or dad's are photographers, and you can see if they can take pictures of the kids for $1 or $2 a pic. They would use an instant camera. Also, if your having it in the cafeteria, see if you can sell food and things there. You can have votes for the best couple and etc.
