I have a set of 1895 Britannica encyclopedias in rough shape. Are they worth anything? There is no other date in the books.

If it is complete it may be worth something, since it is over 100 years old, and considered an antique. The condition will lessen the value. I would take it to several book dealers for free appraisals
As they are over 100 years old they might be worth some thing in good condition. I would go on eBay and see if there is similar encyclopedias for sale.
Without photos and more info, it is hard to give you a good market value.
I found this one, that if it is an exact match to yours sold on a national auction site for $35 2 years ago (the market probably has not changed too much in 2 years):

These look like they are in very nice shape, so your condition issues would drop value.
Now that said, if this is NOT an exact match, the value given is irrelevant...this is why it is so important when researching to have exact matches to sold items to give current market values.
I found no like items on eBay either in current or sold. When valuing it is important to only use SOLD as that is what someone actually paid. Active auctions has a price someone wants, it doesn't become a value until someone pays it :)
Because these are quite heavy, you may be best, as the others suggest, taking them to a local dealer and getting an estimate and see if they will purchase.
If you go in asking for them to purchase, they will usually low ball you in value. You could go in and ask about insurance values and they may give you are more reasonable value for them.
Also, since the condition is bad, you may want to consider taking them apart and framing the neat pages (there have to be lots of those). These sell quite well, at least where I am, if they are nicely framed and matted.
This person got very creative in his/her work with such pages:
Good luck! Let us know what you find!
hi thanks for all your information and help. I also have the full set in good condition on 15th edition. the 9th edition s very poor as some of their covers are falling off. I took some pictures but I don't know how to upload them on this site
Hi - start another question about your other sets and someone will try to help you find a value.
There is a link at the bottom left under the square that has "upload an image" and it is easy - just click the link and find your picture to upload.
1895 Britannica Encyclopedia's do not seem to have any significant pictures/stories that a regular person would be interested in so that kinda puts a damper on selling books that are in "rough" shape.
