Value of Incomplete Set of Encyclopedia Britannica?

We found some volumes of the Encyclopedia Britannica, 1768, third edition, printed A. Bell. The only problem is there is not a complete set. How much would these books be worth?

If it is over 100 years old, it should have value, even if incomplete. Take it to a couple of book dealers and see what they say.

I'm not sure that you are looking at the correct dates of publication as I cannot find any reference to a set published in 1768.

  • According to Wikipedia the third edition was published 1797:

  • The Encyclopædia Britannica Third Edition (1797) is an 18-volume reference work.
  • en.wikipedia.org/.../Encyclop%C3%A6dia_Britannica_Third_Edition
  • The second edition:
  • The Encyclopædia Britannica Second Edition (1777-1784).
  • There is nothing stated for the year 1768 except as a reference year. Of course there could be other information that I have not found.
  • Here is information a set from 2012 (click on view details) but there is no listed sale price. These books (complete set) look to be in excellent condition.
  • You may wish to think about selling some of the pages from the books as some eBay sellers are doing. But these would be very slow sellers (if they sell).
  • Since there is no reference associated with the information you provided you may have to recheck your information and do the research yourself. eBay, Amazon and Abe's books are the largest selling venues for books.

  • Abe's Books may answer some questions fi you give the correct information.

Thank you for posting that page as it clearly shows (in Roman numerals) 1768 and 3rd edition.

  • I think you will find that printing dates may run earlier than actual publishing dates and that may be the reason no one is speaking of 1768.

  • I think you should consider asking for an appraisal (free) but you will need several photos of the outside and several of the first 3 or 4 pages in the lowest number book. Also, be sure to state what books you have.
  • You may be able to list the books for $65 dollars each if they are in good condition but they may take a very long time to sell.
  • The older single books are usually sought after for their maps and art work. check the volumes you have for art work and maps and post pictures of those pages (if you decide to sell).
  • eBay is the easiest place to list and also the least expensive and that is why book sellers keep their books listed for a long time.
  • Here are a couple of links that have names of places that offer "free" appraisals.

Just to give you an idea of how much old books from this era are worth, this ebay search suggests that a solitary book that's that old can go from $26 to $60 www.ebay.com/.../bn_43515425

since it's not a full set, you'd be looking at selling them as individuals

This link from the Enoch Pratt library provides resources on evaluating the worth of old books www.prattlibrary.org/.../index.aspx?cat=99&id=4695
