I was just wondering the value of a 1940 Montgomery Ward sit down lawnmower in good working condition.

Check eBay often for several months to see what the selling price is
For something like this, I most likely would not go to eBay first (which is very rare for me to say as eBay is my go to for valuing almost everything).
Pieces like the old riding mowers, tractors, and such are a slightly different animal as they are often more favored in one part of the country vs another and more often than not are sold locally in the community or general area from the seller. People are also more into them either by brand or by style and there tend to be niche experts more than generalists out there.
I know from the rare times I see an old mower at a flea, that the sellers are always willing to talk (if they were the owner and just aren't selling it as some old trash pick piece they found). These hold lots of memories for people...and the stories usually involve a father or grandfather and nice bonding memories!
There are some forums on the internet devoted to old machines like these. I am very new to the world of this...and have never posted on any of them...but they are interesting to read. Maybe someone from one of these sites can help you with this request. The sites are:

A recent check at a few auction houses revealed that a person bid $500 for one of these mowers.
On eBay, they have a vintage 1971 mower that is listed for sale at $275.
I would say that you can estimate the value of your mower at $300 to $500 depending on the condition of your mower.
