Value of a Hand Carved Indonesian Buffet?

Value of a Hand Carved Indonesian BuffetI have an Indonesian buffet table with claw feet and some carvings on it of scallop shells. It has 6 drawers and is about 6 feet wide. Was in the home when I bought it.

I am not finding anything that is even similar to this to help you out. I have looked at all kinds of furniture from Indonesia but I can not even find a buffet table at all. I would suggest that you contact an antique dealer who specializes in this type of furniture.

This looks like a lovely piece. I am positive the photos don't do it justice.

From what I can see it has Chippendale style lines and looks more European to me vs. Indonesian. Can you share how you know it is Indonesian?

It is almost impossible from any photos, let alone from photos that are dark and blurry, if you have a genuine antique or a more modern reproduction piece. I feel bad having to say that, but anyone who studies antique and vintage furniture worth their salt, would not give you any information based on these photos.

I do suggest having someone look at it in person because there are lots of things that need to be considered, including the type of wood, the actual condition, and age. Another huge thing with furniture valuing is smells. If it has even a whiff of cigarette or other smoke smell or mildew, the value will drop even if it is an otherwise valuable antique.

Once they know what you have, then they can value it for where you are located. Having sold furniture pieces throughout the years and in different cities, I can honestly tell you that a piece in one town may fetch big bucks and that same piece in another city, pennies on the dollar. It is just the nature of furniture reselling.

I would have someone from a reputable vintage/antique shop in your town assess it if for you.

Please post back what you learn!! It is a neat piece and I would love to hear more about it!

Thanks for sharing!
