Value of an 1897 Webster's Dictionary?

Value of an 1897 Webster's Dictionary - coverI am curious as to the value of this item. A similar one dated 1892 is listed on eBay, minus inscription, for $500. The cover is worn, front detached at the spine, but otherwise in good shape. The inscription reads Mrs. C. Newbanks. Book presented by her son Neal. March 18, 1897.

Most of the ones I have seen on ebay go for $50-$150. I would take it to a dealer for an accurate appraisal.

I see you are looking at eBay ASKING prices. Asking prices are very misleading and get people all excited only to see sold prices...which are sadly low.

Sellers ask the moon for these items. I have never seen one sell for more than $100 and that was for one that was pristine. Most sell in the $25 range for poor shape and $50 for good shape.

You can see actual SOLD prices by clicking on the sold button to the lower left on eBay's classic menu. There are lots sold in the range I am giving you on a variety of venues, so this is pretty much the worldwide value.

Do you know who the person is that it is made out to? Is it someone famous in your area?

That may fetch a bit more if it is a famous person, but if not, the writing should have little to no impact on the value.

You can always try shopping it to an antique dealer and seeing if it has more value where you are located for an in person sale.

Post back with how it goes for you!

I dont personally know who the person is, and I dont think it is local. Did some googling and really never came up with anything.

The signature then should have no impact on the value. I was hoping it was someone famous!!

Post back with how your sale goes! Blessing!! Thanks for sharing!

The value is always determined by the condition of the book. There are a few antique booksellers that can help with the binding of the book in order to fetch a higher price for this book.

I would also ask them the real value of this book. Selling them online normally brings in a lower value and at an auction house for antique books brings in a higher price.
