This was gifted to me and I'm very curious about the marker and age and also its value? Before I do anything to it, I want to be sure if it's best to keep as is or paint?
This is all new to me, but I'm excited to find out more info!
Thank you in advance for any information.

First off there does not look like there is a name on this item. Can you check inside to see who has made this? Second if you want to keep the value of the item it is best to leave it as it is and not add a coat of paint over the top of the finish. In order to find out more about anitem it is necessary to find out who has made the piece.
I was cleaning it and never found a marking on the wood. But cleaning the hardware on it, I saw markings. It took me about 30mins and my brother's assistants ( with a magifine glass) to read the markings. The top latch reads.. Belguim (LRS)?... and the bottom ( that we could make out) Britishpatno445(6or8)V34. They look authentic and never replaced. I am trying to get some good pics of them.
Because there is not a lot of info on the piece, you could take more pictures inside and out. Take your pictures to a antiques store/dealer, so a professional eye can take a look and evaluate your piece.
This looks like it could be a legit antique with some inherent value, but without a marker, there's no way to tell. It looks like the sort of antique that would have inherent value due to its age.
Since it is your piece, my advice is, unless you are seeking to flip it, do with it what you want. If you want to paint it, you can. There's something to be said for preserving its purity but in the end you have to live with it so do what you like best.
