Varnish Damaged by Spilled Perfume?

Varnished Damaged by Spilled Perfume - finish damage on dresserThe dressing table has a gloss vanish finish. I noticed some alcohol from a perfume bottle has leaked. I've tried to clean with a paper towel and all purpose cleaner. The spill has removed the vanish finish and the stain and now I can see bare wood in a section. Any tips of how I can fix at home, this furniture is part of a rental property and is not mine. Please help!

I have done the same thing. Twice. Take a drawer out and take the drawer to Lowe's and match the stain and varnish or clear coat. Sand it and apply. I got lucky and was able to get a perfect match so I only had to redo the damaged area. But , you make have to do the entire dresser top.

The whole top has to be refinished. It is too big an area to spot finish. Remove the varnish and restain

I would sand down the top layer and stain the wood again.

it will cost more in time and money to fix it rather than just pay for it and cover it with paint or fabric

Oh no :( the whole thing must be sanded evenly and refinished.

You can spot repair it if you can match the stain and the varnish finish. Determine If its a gloss or a satin type finish.
1) match the stain.

2) use fine sand paper (400 grit) and sand the area and a little bit of whats not damaged around the damaged area, an inch or so.
3) stain the sanded wood and let dry.
4) use a tack cloth and wipe away all dust and debris- use a spray varnish and put a very light coat on. Allow to dry completely.
5) with very fine sand paper (600-1000 grit) lightly sand the area you varnished.
6) using a tack cloth wipe it clean of all dust and particles.
7) spray another light coat and let dry completely. Sand again and try to blend it in with the existing varnish
8) repeat the sanding and varnishing steps until it blends seamlessly.
Wipe on poly is an easy and great way to do a finish coat if its a satin finish.
It takes patience to do it right. But it can be done.
