Can I put clear varnish on a painted wooden door? They are new doors and I have just painted them with a satin sheen paint. I want to be able to protect them from dirt from dogs laying up against the door without having to clean every day which will wear the paint away eventually

I would think going over them with polyurethane would be ok. You can either spray or paint it on. It comes in clear so it shouldn't affect the color of your new paint but it should still protect it from the elements.
Varnishing painted door.
Step 1
You must first strip off the paint.
Step 2
You can varnish if it is high quality wood.
Step 3
Follow all instructions on the paint stripper.
Step 4
Use paint brush to apply paint stripper then scrape off with a flat scraper.
Step 5
Then clean surface with cloth using instructions from the stripper.
Step 6

Step 1
Painted door.
Step 2
I would suggest that you go into either a hardware store that has a paint depart or a paint store before doing any thing.
Step 3
Explain what you want to do.
Step 4
There are many types of clean vanish and let them suggest the best type for you to use.
Step 5
No not do the whole door, try a small corner at first and wait and see the results after it dries.
Step 6
Good luck !!
