Refinish table top:
Step 1
You have already removed the old varnish and stain on your table top.
Step 2
In your image the table top looks like it has a lot of scratch marks on it from using the scraper.
Step 3
You are going to need to sand the top of this table smooth and remove a few of those marks on the table.
Step 4
In this type of table it is not wise to use a stain/varnish spray to finish the top of your table.
Step 5
You will need to sand the table completely smooth.
Step 6
Wipe the table clean, damp cloth to remove all the wood particles left from sanding the table.
Step 7
Let the table dry at least 3 hours to make sure the wood is no longer wet.
Step 8
Now use your stain.
Step 9
Apply your first coat of stain to the table top.
Step 10
When using stain you can either leave it as it is or wipe it off. I like wiping my off after i have applied the stain. For some reason it has a nicer look to me.
Step 11
Let this dry at least 24 hours before applying your 1st coat of varnish.
Step 12
This will depend on you and what looks good to you or not. I normally add 2 coats of varnish to my refinished wood.
Step 13
You will need to leave the table 24 to 48 hours before applying your second coat of varnish.
Step 14
I wouldn't use a spray on this table it will only leave streaks and not have the finished look that you are looking for.
You may have an oily wood that the finish is not adhering to. You might need an epoxy sealer as a bonding agent.
Re-doing a table.
Step 1
I would sand it first and start over.
Step 2
Then stain and seal it.
