My Viking Designer SE will only go backwards. Anyone know how to fix this?

One of the gears may be broken. You need servicing.
at least in my sewing machine, there was this wheel or knob that you pressed in to make it go one way, and pressed out to make it go the opposite way. This was failing too and we ended up taking the knob out to try to fix the problem but coudn't figure out what it was so ended up taking it to the shop. It ended up being a simple fix but I forget what it was now
