Sorry, but the fruit flies "on" bananas actually come from INSIDE the banana where the mother fruit flies lays her legs. They are in there from when they are harvested in Central and South America and the fruit itself is their incubator. Before they get really ripe you should use them as once they reach a certain degree of ripeness, those little pests start journeying to the outside of the banana. they pose no danger in their incubating stage. this information is from a daughter whose PhD thesis was on the fruit fly ! A PhD in molecular Biology with a minor in chemistry qualifies her opinion. Sorry...Elizabeth M.
